Sports Betting

When most people think of sports betting, they imagine horse racing.  Betting on horses has been a popular pastime for centuries, and it’s no doubt that it’s the most prolific type of sports betting.  However sports betting goes far beyond the racetrack.  Nowadays, sports enthusiasts can bet on almost any aspect of a game or match, from the final score of a basketball game to the number of times a certain player will score.  There are plenty of fun angles to gamble on for everyone, from the extreme sports fan to the casual viewer.

Traditionally, sports betting is done through a bookkeeper, or a “bookie”, but with the popularity of Internet gambling, sports bets can be made at any time from any place.  Gambling hot spots like Las Vegas are also great places to make sports bets.  Live sports betting is only legal in certain areas, like Vegas and the Saratoga Racetrack in New York, but bets can be made from all over the country.

The most important thing to keep in mind when placing a sports bet is that you should consider your odds before you make a bet.  Betting on a favorite will not win you very much money, though it’s a much safer bet than betting on an underdog.  Sports betting is based around the fact that if you make a riskier bet, you will receive a greater reward.  If you’re just getting into sports betting, start with safer bets until you understand the sport and the odds.

There are two main types of sports bets.  A moneyline bet is the simplest type of bet, and is usually a straight up bet on which team will win.  The bookmakers create the odds based on the team that is the favorite to win, which will then determine how much money a gambler will receive from a winning bet.  Moneyline bets are popular with sports that generally don’t have high scores, such as hockey or baseball.  Point spread betting is a more complex form of sports betting.  Bookmakers predict the projected scores for both teams and gamblers bet on, for instance, whether or not they think the favorite team will beat the underdog team by 20 or more points.  Point spreads are generally used with football and basketball bets.

Once you have become an experienced sports gambler, you can engage in more complex bets with higher payouts.  Betting on multiple games with the same bet is called a parlay.  If you win all of the bets, the reward will be high.  However if even just one of the bets is a losing one, you will lose the entire parlay.

While individual sports games are very popular to bet on, major athletic events also draw in a large amount of betting.  The Super Bowl, the Olympics and the Kentucky Derby entice even first-time gamblers to try their luck.  The best thing about betting on these major events is that you don’t have to know anything about the sport – bets can be made on who will win or the final score of the game.  The odds are created to give any individual a fair shot, so give it your best and make a bet.

It’s easy to be intimidated by sports fan betting hundreds of dollars on sporting events, but sports betting is fun and easy for anyone who is looking for ways to make sports more interesting.
