Workout Routines
When it comes to exercising, there’s no single routine that is good for everybody. In fact each person’s body will respond differently to the same exercise, so it’s important that you choose something that will work for your personal case. This includes taking into account your current weight and fitness level, your goals and even your likes and dislikes.
Here are seven other tips to help you choose the best routine:
Establish a reasonable schedule. Be aware of your own personal times and work around other activities. Also, make sure you schedule exercise at the time when you have more energy. This will make it easier to stick to it and will allow you to work harder.
Don’t think of exercise as all or nothing. While you should be working 30-40 minutes at least four times a week in order to see results, you may be pushing your body too hard if you start doing that from the beginning. Instead, break down the activities into 10 minute chunks or switch between cardio, resistance training and crunches if 30 minutes of one of them is too much.
Choose an activity you like. If you hate running, a treadmill is not for you. Instead, choose biking, hiking, or swimming. If there was something you always wanted to try such as boxing or dance, making that part of your exercise routine will keep you from getting bored and giving up.
Keep your personality in mind. If you like working with others or need the push or a partner to get you through a workout, group classes may the best choice. If you prefer privacy you may do better working one-on-one with a trainer or buying some DVDs and working out on your own at home.
Plan a workout you can stick to. You may want to go hiking four times a week, but how realistic is that goal? Can you really get out of the city or make your way to local trails that often? Will it involve one hour of driving? What happens when the weather is bad or you had to work overtime? You don’t have to give up hiking if you truly love it, but keep other more accessible options in mind as well.
Don’t assume a routine is right for you just because it worked for your best friend. If somebody you know raves about a specific class or exercise machine, give it a try but don’t commit to anything just yet. Do it for a few days or a couple of weeks and see how it feels, if you get results, and how much you enjoy it. Only commit once you are sure that it’s the right choice for you.
Find a way to be more active in daily life. This is especially important if you have little to no free time and you know in advance you won’t make it to the gym every day. If you have children, spend time with them outdoors, riding through a local park, playing soccer or going skating. If you have a dog, make it a goal to take longer walks. Rather than looking for random activities, choose the ones that fit into your current lifestyle.
